The St. Petersburg City Theatre is holding auditions Oct. 17 and 18 for the award-winning, musical hit Hairspray. This Broadway production is set in 1962, where pleasantly plump teen, Tracy Turnblad turns her chance at fame into a full-blown campaign to racially integrate her favorite television program The Corny Collins Show. She dances her way into the hearts of many, wins a role on the show, and becomes an overnight celebrity.
The director is looking for a large cast of singers and dancers ages 16 and older for teenage and adult characters. Roles include Tracy Turnblad and Edna Turnblad, Tracy’s kind and plus-sized mother (a drag role). There’s also Amber Von Tussie a bratty no-talent who will stop at nothing to win the Miss Teenage Hairspray pageant. Or you could try out for the role of the handsome heartthrob Link Larkin along with many other fun characters.
There will be 1960s-style snappy dance music and rhythm and blues, so have appropriate shoes for a dance audition. Numbers will include the original up-beat favorites like, “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” “Big, Blonde, and Beautiful” and many others.
The St. Petersburg City Theatre will begin it’s 87th season with Hairspray and a new name. Once named St. Petersburg Little Theater, the oldest community theater in Florida has decided they are not so “little” anymore. The theater has indeed grown and now features musical theater workshops as well as acting and voice classes. They also offer The Petite Theater open to children ages 8 to 14 with productions like Tom Sawyer and The Musical Adventures of Oliver Twist.
Don’t miss out! Celebrate this new chapter with The St. Petersburg City Theatre by showing off your talent and your support for the arts. Performances will be held January 20 through February 5. Check with The St. Petersburg City Theater website here to find out more information.
