Description
This is a two hour activity that begins with interactive discussion of the impacts on the ocean from humans. Lessons will include, recycling, keeping the beach and ocean clean, conservation of water, carbon impact in child terms.
Children will be provided plankton nets. Children will go into the water (with Parent supervision) to net plankton. Instructions on how to use the plankton nets will be provided.
Children will net the plankton and bring them back to the tent site. Young children will view the plankton through the magnifying cup on the net. Older children will bring theirs back to the tent and see them via the field microscopes. Plankton identifiers will be provided to assist children finding the names of what they found.
Discussions on Turtle nesting- Watch the Sea Princess site for updates on turtle nesting. (During nesting season).
Sea Shell classifications- Contest who can find the most varieties. Classification chart will be available so children can see the names.
Ocean coral- lessons on what coral does for the ocean and what it looks like. Children will have hands on coral pieces to examine. These pieces have been salvaged from the shore. No coral will be harvested from the ocean. Discussions will center on what is needed for healthy reefs.
Children will make palm crowns to wear. Palm cuttings will be braided together to make the crown. Children will be given a jewel for their crown upon completion of activity. A resin star fish attached
