Amy Poehler, Matt Besser, Ian Roberts and Matt Walsh founded upright Citizens Brigade in Chicago in 1993. In 1996, Upright Citizens Brigade relocated to the Big Apple, soon becoming a comedy staple in New York City. UCB began doing a regular show and offering improv training to aspiring comedians and actors in the area. Their shows began growing in popularity until they were finally able to open The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Chelsea 1999 followed by a second theater in New York's East Village.

Hilarious actors come out of the UCB Theatre and many cast members have gone on to join the cast of Saturday Night Live! The Upright Citizens Brigade also boast a legion of successful comedy stars appearing on TV shows like Veep, Broad City, and Silicon Valley.

Past UCB cast members can also be found in films including The Hangover, Bridesmaid, and The Heat. Others have become comedy writers for popular and successful shows like Inside Amy Schumer, Key & Peele and The Daily Show.
