Description
“Jane: Abortion and the Underground” by Paula Kamen is a powerful, part-documentary staged reading that tells the story of the Jane Collective, an underground network that provided safe abortions in Chicago before Roe V Wade.
Event Details
The return of the Helene/Milton shuttered staged reading of Paula Kamen's Jane: Abortion and the Underground is on January 6th at HCC Mainstage Ybor at 7 pm. But that’s not all—on January 7th at 7 pm, all those who attended the January 6 performance will have the opportunity to participate in Powerstories' exclusive Zoom conversation with three original Janes.
In Paula Kamen’s gripping part-documentary drama, step into the hidden world of Chicago's underground abortion service, "Jane," which operated from 1969 to 1973. Based on rare, firsthand interviews, this Powerstories PowerUp staged reading reveals the true story of a courageous feminist collective—housewives and students—who provided a lifeline to over 8,000 women. With the support of unlikely allies, "Jane" offered safe and life-saving services, operating right out of local apartments.
This one-time event is a powerful tale of defiance, courage, and solidarity, reminding us of the ongoing fight for reproductive rights. Don't miss your chance to witness this timely, impactful story of resilience and resistance.
On January 7th, all ticketholders will receive a Zoom link midday to join the conversation that evening with playwright Paula Kamen, and Janes - Heather Booth, Diane Stevens, and Eileen Smith.
Our spectacular cast features:
Fran Powers as Heather
