Once you're there, you'll find a quaint island environment that plays host to a massive wildlife refuge, beautiful beaches, and a ton of interesting history behind it. During the 19th century, Egmont Key played host to a military fort and camp for captured Seminole indians at the end of the Third Seminole War. When the Civil War rolled around, the island served as a base for the U.S. Navy at the time. At the end of the 19th century as the Spanish-American War threatened the area, the military built Fort Dade on the island which stayed active until 1923 and stil stands today.
Also standing today, is a historical lighthouse that was built on the island in 1858. If you're in to Florida history or just want to give it a look, the historical remnants on Egmont Key are a must-see. After that, visitors can enjoy all the recreation Egmont Key has to offer including relaxing on the beach, fishing right off the coast, animal sightseeing outside the wildlife refuge, picnicking, and more.
